How to decide when to use Cron stones
September 26, 2026
Use them when losing the attempt costs more than the stones do. That is the whole calculation, and it resolves differently for an accessory that gets destroyed than for a weapon that drops one level.
What they do
Cron stones protect the item during a failed enhancement. On weapons and armour they prevent the enhancement level from falling. On accessories they prevent the destruction that failure otherwise causes.
They are consumed on every attempt they are attached to, whether it succeeds or fails. The amount required is fixed for a given item at a given level, so the cost of an attempt is knowable before you make it.
The cost they carry that is not silver
The official Adventurer's Guide states that "if you enhance with cron stones, the equipment enhancement chance will not increase in case of failure."
A protected failure therefore leaves you where you started, minus the stones. No level lost, and no failstack gained either. Every unprotected failure at least pays you in counter, per How to build a failstack in Black Desert Online.
That makes the real question a comparison between three outcomes instead of two.
| Attempt | On success | On failure |
|---|---|---|
| Without Cron | Item enhanced, stack spent | Level or item lost, stack gained |
| With Cron | Item enhanced, stack spent, stones gone | Nothing changes, stones gone |
When the answer is yes
Accessories you cannot easily replace are the clearest case, because failure destroys both the accessory and the one fed to it. Anything you would struggle to buy again is worth protecting on every attempt.
High enhancement levels on gear are the second. The value lost in a downgrade climbs steeply with level, while the stone cost climbs more slowly. Somewhere up that curve the stones become cheaper than the fall, and above that point protection is the default.
Attempts you cannot afford to repeat are the third. Where the materials for another try would take days to gather, the stones buy certainty that a failure costs you only the stones.
When the answer is no
While you are building a stack, protection removes the one thing a failure is for.
At low enhancement levels, a drop costs little and is quickly redone, so paying stones to avoid it loses money on average.
On gear you plan to replace, protecting an item you will discard in a week converts stones into nothing.
Where they come from
Cron stones are bought from a blacksmith for silver, and they are also produced by melting down outfits from the pearl shop, which the community generally treats as the cheaper route per stone.
Both prices move, so work the comparison out at today's numbers. The blacksmith price, the stone counts per attempt and the outfit yield have all been adjusted over the game's life, and carrying a figure over from an old guide is how people end up losing silver on a trade they thought was settled.
The honest summary
Cron stones convert a risk into a fixed fee. That is a good trade when the risk is large and a bad one when the risk is small, and the game gives you the numbers you need on the enhancement window to tell which case you are in.
What no guide can give you is the probability table, because the developer has never published it. The tooltip in front of you is the most reliable figure available.
